Beginning Tap Dance
Beginning Tap Dance is a movement course focusing on the basic techniques of tap dancing. Students will learn the history, style and language of tap dance through movement exercises, lectures, videos, performance and written exams and movement composition activities.
All Beginning Tap students should have a pair of tap shoes which will be worn at every class meeting.
Tap shoes may be purchased at a dance supply store. This is the best way to ensure the right fit. There are many stores in the STL areas to choose from, but Dance Supply Etc. in O'Fallon and Head-To-Toe Dancewear in Kirkwood are two stores that are familiar with the shoes required for IWA classes. They will also offer a discount if you mention IWA. You can order shoes from an online distributor, such as Discount Dance Supply. Just follow the sizing guidelines for the brand you choose because dance shoes sizing can be different than street shoes. Two of the recommended shoe styles from this site are: Dance Now Women's Jazz Tap Shoes, Theatricals Adult Lace Up Tap Shoes T9500 and Capezio Adult "Tic Tap Toe" Lace-Up Tap Shoes. Or, borrow a pair from a sister, friend or cousin that wears the same size. Just make sure you can keep them for the entire semester. You will need them every day in class!
